TCC Films: Cool Hand Luke

No one but Paul Newman would have been cool enough to play Luke in the 1967 film Cool Hand Luke. Luke is a flawed Christ figure who refuses to submit to the authority of the prison gaurds in his bleak rural Florida prison. Maybe he can’t win, but he’d rather be beaten and preserve his humanity. What the head prisoner Dragline says of Luke could have been said of Jesus, “Oh Luke, you wild, beautiful thing. You crazy handful of nothin’.” Luke endures every kind of punishment and is often betrayed by his fellow men and by God, whom he feels has abandoned him. And yet, he is a moral voice until the end. When one of the prisoner guards tells Luke he’s just doing his job, Luke replies, “Calling it your job don’t make it right.”  Watch the trailer here:
